PPBMR Destination Ride 11 Jan 09

Post by Warthog on Sun Jan 11, 2009 10:49 pm

Just got back from the Pike Peak BMW Riders event today. It was one of those odd ones and I almost did not go. The weather was chilly but I wanted to try out my new tour master electric jacket liner - it worked great - and it was a good excuse to get out of the house.

The destination was a place near the west gate of Fort Carson on Highway 115 called the the May Museum of Natural History. You can't miss it there is a giant beetle at the entrance. I had driven past it numerous times and never thought about stopping as it looked like one of those typical tourist traps that you would expect to would expect to find along the road in the 1950's.

I must admit that I was pleasantly surprise because even thought the facilities are old the collection was quite impressive. The museum has about 8,00 specimens on display but the collection has over 100,000. Many of the specimens were collected in the early 1900s - 1940's. In the late 1940s the Mays moved to Colorado Springs and shortly there after built a museum to display their collections on their ranch 9 miles southwest of Colorado Springs, CO.
